I have now lived at Vandenberg AFB for six months and I wanted to share with you some my favorite parts of the base.
Vandenberg Air Force Base is located on the Central Coast of California and is about 150 miles northwest of Las Angeles. Vandenberg is also one of the top three largest Air Force bases in the US. Everything is so spread out at first it is easy to get lost!
The entrance to the base is one of the most beautiful I have seen. To me it felt like I was going somewhere really important. The flags of all fifty states line the road as you drive toward the centerpiece, an erected Minuteman missile. At night the lights around the missile light up for a beautiful sight.
One of the things I have most enjoyed about Vandenberg is watching the space launches! Granted, most of them happen at around two o’clock in the morning, but they are worth getting up for. If you don’t choose to wake up and go see the sight be prepared for some rumbling in your house and a very loud noise. Your dog may also freak out a bit. Ours did! :)
The other great thing about being stationed at Vandenberg AFB is the beaches! They are beautiful! Swimming is allowed on the civilian-access beach only, but don’t let that get you down. The water is freezing! The best things to do at the beach are jogging, hiking, picnicking, fishing, taking long walks along the water and taking pictures! I have not seen any myself but I have friends who have even seen sea lions!
More about Vandenberg coming soon!
